We arrived in Kakadu on Tuesday after an arduous 3 hour drive (well it felt a long way after no traveling for a week). We enjoyed a stop off at Mamukala wetlands which had thousands of different birds congregating as the wet areas shrink. My photos probably don't do it justice but wonderful to see. Arriving in Jabiru we checked into the Kakadu Resort & van park - just love their pool as temps reach 36+.
Today was bike ride around Jabiru itself - much bigger then we realized. Then we headed out to Ubirr rock art and lookout. Wow what an amazing place and a big Thank You to guide Glenn who spent around 3 hours talking to us about the art and the local indigenous people. At the end of the rock art tour you climb to the top of the lookout that offers superb views over Nadab floodplain. Well worth the time spent although glad we had plenty of water as it was pretty hot.
Then back to the Corner Store which basically signals the end of Kakadu NP and the start of Arhnem Land. At the corner store Ranger Jess, with 3 women from Guluyambi, gave a lesson on basket weaving and dying the pandanus leaves they use. Needless to say we couldn't even strip the leaves correctly so we are not bringing home a handmade basket (well not made by us anyway).
We finished with a walk down to East Alligator River. Now we didn't see a single Alligator however the place was teaming with crocodiles. Ranger Tom (Garry's nephew) was telling us last night when he was driving across the river at high tide he had to beep at a croc which was lazying on the causeway. Hope you enjoy the photos xx
Fantastic photos rob. Particularly of el crocodilo! He was only a baby at 2m but impressive enough. Could still do plenty of damage if he attached himself to a part of your torso. Ouch.
